The Importance Of Yoga

So P90X, P90X2 and P90X3 all have Yoga in them. I’ll be honest, when I did P90X and P90X2 I skipped Yoga days and did some other workout? That would be why I am probably one of the most non-flexible, tightest hamstrings and hip flexors person you will ever meet. Well in P90X3 I have done the Yoga and I love it. Maybe because it’s only 30 minutes, compared to the hour to hour and a half programs in P90X and P90X2.  The workout flies by and the moves are challenging, but not that challenging and you still get a sweat on while stretching and strengthening muscles.l-Kitty-yoga...-STRREEETTTCCCHHH

Here’s why I think Yoga is important to do and no I have not found nor looked out of my third eye. If you’re not an active person, but still want to maintain flexibility and blood flow in your joints and muscles without working up a huge cardio surge, then Yoga might be for you. Yoga has been proven to help people lose weight, lower their cholesterol and triglyceride levels and reduces the onset of diseases related to the heart (coronary atherosclerotic disease and coronary artery disease).  Yoga is low-impact, which is good for those suffering from arthritis, asthma, low back pain and osteoporosis. So as I stated before, strength and stretching (flexibility) are other perks you gain from Yoga, but so are an increase in balance control and a reduction in knee problems (no impact jarring).

yoga-dogLastly, because Yoga is a mind-body exercise, there have been studies showing a decrease in stress hormones, a decrease in anxiety and depression, people sleep better and there are decreases in symptoms relating to pain, asthma, angina and chronic fatigue.

So, clear your mind, roll out the mat and put on some lose fitted clothing because it’s time to center yourself. Peace.

P90X3 Is it worth your TIME?

But what can you can done in those 30 minutes that will be effective and give you the results you’re looking for when working out? Well there are 18 workouts and those workouts consist of moves that work on your aerobic and anaerobic energy (cardio and resistance), power, flexibility, balance, strength, core strength and body awareness. As I said these workouts are 30 MINUTES so not only the time of the workout, but the intensity, frequency, type of exercise and recovery periods what makes that 30 minutes so special. A 90 day program with workouts 6 days a week or add in the Dynamix workout in lieu of “resting”.

  • Triometrics – (a plyometrics workout that explosive and focuses on 3 different difficulty levels for each exercise while minimizing the downtime needed between the moves)
  • MMX – (kenpo, judo, karate, jiu-jitsu and tae wkon do are all here in this cardio workout that works not only upper body, but core, legs and your flexibility)
  • Eccentric Upper and Eccentric Lower – (time under tension will create muscle growth)
  • Decelerator – (In order to increase your stability and protect muscles,  joints and connective tissues, you must use different force loads while using different angles with those loads)
  • Cold Start – (longer warm-up to increase your heart rate, warm up your muscles and get the juices flowing)
  • ***Complex Upper and Complex Lower –  (for the elite trainer in you, this focuses on musculoskeletal strength,  muscle elasticity, dynamic movement, core work and mobility with weighted resistance)
  • ***X3 Ab Ripper – (focusing on 4 areas of your core: the washboard abs (rectus abdominus), your internal and external obliques (sides) and your transverse abs (the abs under the abs) you’ll get an ab-tastic 15 minute workout)

  • Chin-up Max (or resistance bands)
  • Powerstands (optional)
  • Dumbbells (or resistance bands)

  • Yoga Blocks (optional)

**Resistance bands may be used in lieu of a pull-up bar and weights, but it is highly recommended that you have a variety of resistance bands available for use.

**Yoga blocks are recommended for those new to yoga who are not that flexible and need added balance and support.

Strength Training….Does it REALLY matter?

If you’re like me you LOVE CARDIO. Your heart pounding, sweat dripping and all of your body parts moving. Listening to your favorite beats will your cycling at your fastest RPM’s or training for your first 5k. Is all of this cardio really that good for you? I mean without any sort of resistance training, all your doing is pumping, pumping your heart muscles without working on stabilizing or strengthening some of your other major muscles groups like, quads, calves, hamstrings, glutes, lats, biceps, triceps, traps, chest and core.

So, why do strength training AND cardio. The combination of both wiIMG_20120627_193802ll burn more calories between the repetitive motion of cardio, where you to take minimal to no breaks in a fairly long distance of time, and the heavy lifting, where you to take many mini breaks to either change out weights, move to another routine or just let your muscles “breath” for a minute. For one thing, strength training is needed to sustain muscle mass and increases your bones density, which is extremely beneficial when it comes to all of the stress you can put on your joints and bones from running, cycling, jumping, etc… Whenever you take on muscle, your body becomes this amazing furnace for calories and begins to slowly burn them away, so the right combination cardio and strength training will have you burning fuel and slimming down, but with the right intake of proper food you can always keep the furnace lit=energy sustained.  Energy sustained is more motivation, more focus and feeling young and spry again, like a teenager.

Because strength training strengthens muscles and increases bone density, as you age, you minimize the likelihood of encountering osteoporosis,  brittle bones, arthritis or encountering back issues. The proper nutrition, cardio and strength training will aide in the prevention of diabetes, heart disease, obesity.

P90X2…is it worth it?

So the question is, Is P90X2 worth it? Worth your time? Worth your money? My answer to these questions is YES!!! YES!!! and YES!!!  P90X2 takes it to the next level by use of stability balls, medicine balls and for those who are not proficient at doing pull-ups on your own, they have created a wonderful device called the pull-up assist. A lot more sturdier that using a chair and the better you get at doing pull-ups, the lower you make the pull-up assist so it is more YOU doing the exercises that the assist.

This program starts at focusing on your core. Which is the most important part of development with this program because as the program progresses into stability, mobility, balance and strength moves…the more secure, strong and stable your core is then the greater your success will be. Moves throughout this program include medicine ball burpees, stability ball push-ups, 4 position pull-ups, Drea (Webber) rolls, 4 ball push ups, yoga, Recovery and Mobility with a foam roller, and many more moves that are much more fun to experience for yourself than to read about.

One of the great things about all of these videos are the warm-ups. They are not your everyday, run of the mill warm-ups. Tony integrates the use of the stability ball (or a towel) to warm up with while doing squats, lunges and other moves to elongate and warm-up the body. Also the use of the foam roller really gets into parts of the body to help  loosen lactic acid or muscle tightness, prepping your tendons for a glorious workout. Sometimes just warming up in and of itself gets the sweat going and the heart pumping (wonderful, awesome goodness).

This program is challenging because some of the moves take TIME, PATIENCE and PRACTICE to master, but as the motto goes in any of the P90X programs “The More You Do, The Better You Get!”  There is always somebody modifying in whatever program you are doing and there is an option to just listen to the “Cues and Music” without having to listen to any of the participants in the programs.

photo-2-2Oh to see all of the faces walk into my Insanity group fitness class.  Some excited and some of them so nervous they walk in the room and look around with an expression of “What have I gotten myself into” face.  Sometimes it takes a wee bit of warming up, moving, listening to the music and some instructions during the group class to get those reluctant of being there to really get into it.

10, 20, 30 minutes go by and you see everyone in the class moving, breathing and sometimes smiling at what they are accomplishing. Reinforcing that those in the class go at their own speed and pace, but make sure that they step up their level of pushing themselves to going faster and doing more reps than before.

At the end of the AMAZING workout, those who were reluctant to come,  enjoyed the class and sweated their butts off just to realize that they are going to come back next week for some more GROUP AMAZE-NESS.

When it comes to fitness, camaraderie, wanting to change your routine and seeing results not only physically but experiencing something emotionally uplifting, then a group fitness class is something to try.

Focus T25 Review

My take on T25. Some of you might have heard the buzz about a new Beachbody program that just came out called Focus T25Well, if you either have or have not heard about the release of this program, I am here to give you the 411 on what Focusing for just 25 minutes a day5 days a week can do for you.1013077_10201155824074410_636945411_n

Shaun T, the creator of Insanity and Insanity: Asylum Volume I and Volume II figured out a way to give people what they were asking for. An efficient and effective workout in a little amount of time. There are three phases to this program: Alpha, Beta and Gamma. Each phase builds upon the other by starting at your base, to core, to upper body and then strength. I am on the fourth week of this program which is the Alpha phase. It consists of Cardio, Speed 1.0, Total Body and lower body workouts and abs. On the 6th day you rest and on the 7th day you stretch, before you do 5 days of hard work for 25 minutes a day, all over again.  This first phase is all about foundation work.  The second phase, Beta is about Core.  We will talk more about that when we get to that phase.

These workouts have you breathing hard, sweating and pushing yourself to do the best you can while FOCUSING for 25 minutes straight. If you need to modify to get through all 25 minutes, you modify with Tania “The Machine”, from Insanity and Hip Hop Abs, Rock’n Body, etc… The music is fun, Shaun T is motivational as always and if you “Trust and Believe” in yourself to commit to just 25 minutes, you will have an amazing transformation.

This is not like Insanity, we get that question a lot.  Insanity gives you breaks.  T25 does not.  You will go for 25 minutes straight during Focus T25.  Insanity you will go for a few minutes and then get a short rest.  Also, Insanity is longer than T25.  Month 1 of Insanity is slightly over 30 minutes and month 2 of Insanity is closer to one hour.  Focus T25 is never more than 25 minutes exactly, that is the beauty of it.  Whether you are in the Alpha, Beta or Gamma phase you will always be working out for 25 minutes.  Lastly, Focus T25 has the modifier so ANYONE, and I mean anyone can do this workout.  Insanity is not for everyone.  It is definitely an advanced program.  If you have questions about either program just contact us.

This program is great for those who are crunched for time, looking for a full body, efficient, effective, creative work out that will give amazing results not only physically but emotionally because you will not only look good, but feel better and have more time to do the things that are important to you; spend time with family!!!!   It is by far one of my favorites and a great program to use as a hybrid to mix in with something like Body Beast, P90X or another lifting program for that extra cardio.  If you want to contact us about doing a hybrid go ahead and do so as Jo-Anne is doing Body Beast and T25 for a great mix up program.

What’s New with the P90X2 Nutrition Guide?

Denis Faye, the Wellness Expert and Fitness Advisor for Beachbody, wrote a wonderful article recently about what is new in the P90X2 Nutrition Guide.  As we prepare for the upcoming arrival of  P90X2 we should also prepare our stomachs for the new improvements in the nutrition guide.  The changes are good and we should all be very happy that Beachbody has made these wonderful improvements.  Read Denis’ article below and get prepared for this new workout and nutrition plan that will be here in the next couple months!

Everyone wants to know how we went about breaking down the P90X® Nutrition Guide and rebuilding it into the P90X2 Nutrition Guide. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

In a way, that’s true. Just as Steve Austin was a great astronaut before Oscar Goldman and the OSO spent $6 million to turn him into the Bionic Man, the P90X guide is still a great resource. However, you, our customers, have changed. We’ve spent the last 9 years watching you evolve into better, stronger, faster fitness fanatics. Our job was the make sure the guide evolved with you. Our job was to make a bionic nutrition plan.

When P90X first came out, Beachbody® had a fairly uniform customer base. Today, however, our customers come from all walks of life, so we need to address a much broader spectrum of needs. For example, a 105-pound mother of five just isn’t going to have the same nutritional requirements as a professional basketballer. (Everyone knows the mom’s life would be much more physically challenging.

Furthermore, our original customers, after one or more rounds of P90X, with possibly a little INSANITY®thrown in for good measure, have become incredibly aware of their nutritional needs. They’ve learned exactly how much protein, carbs, and fat they need to perform. They’ve also started experimenting with various nutritional philosophies. Although I’m neither a vegan nor a primal eater, the sheer volume of questions about each on the Team Beachbody® Message Boards has forced me to become an expert on both.

So we took these factors, combined them with the latest research, and voilà! Welcome to the P90X2 Fuel Your Performance Nutrition Guide, a collection of 27 different subplans, among which you’ll hopefully find a way of eating that works for you.

 

Out with the old

In order to offer all this variety, we decided to do away with the menu plan. The vast majority of P90X users preferred the portion plan anyway, so we focused on that. However, everyone loves a good recipe, so we reached out to some of our favorite chefs, including Tony’s personal chef Melissa Costello, and asked them to design a host of meals for every occasion. In this new guide, you’ll find scores of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, soups, salads, and Shakeology® recipes. Because we also have grain-free and vegan plans in P90X2, we made sure to have plenty of recipes to suit both of these dietary approaches as well. As was the case with P90X, each recipe lists the portion boxes to check when you eat it.

And don’t worry, all your favorite recipes from the P90X Nutrition Guide will still work with P90X2.

We also tossed out a lot of the junkier food options featured in the P90X portion lists. At that point, many of you were still transitioning to healthy eating. At this stage, you should have no need for veggie dogs, V8®, or that fast food portion conversion list in the back of the old guide.

 

In with the new

For every low-quality choice we eliminated from the portion lists, we added two healthy and delicious choices. You’ll find new fats, snacks, proteins, and more.

The three calorie “levels”—1,800, 2,400, and 3,000—are still there, as are the different macronutrient balances. However, given that the latest research is making the importance of dietary fat increasingly obvious, we upped the fat in all three “phases.” We’ve also redubbed them “plans,” because while we encouraged you to work your way up the three phases with P90X, by now you should have a pretty good idea what works best for you when it comes to performance, shedding fat, or both. In P90X2, you can just pick the one that works for you and run with it, changing plans whenever you feel like it.

That said, if you’re still not sure if you should be eating the “Fat Shredder 2.0” approach, the “Energy Booster 2.0” approach, or the “Endurance Maximizer 2.0” approach, we’ve included a section to help you figure that out.

As mentioned above, we’ve also added vegan and grain-free options that work for all three calorie “levels” and all three macronutrient “plans.” If you’re familiar with these lifestyles, you can jump right in. Otherwise, the book includes plenty of information on how to implement them. Also, we acknowledge that some of you cowboys (and cowgirls) don’t like to be restrained by portion lists. You just want to know how many calories or grams of carbs, protein, and fat to eat so that you can use your own foods and measurements. For y’all, we’ve provided charts listing all the numbers you need if you decide to forego the portion plan and just hit the macronutrient numbers on your own. Yee-hah!

Finally, we’ve let our top-notch design team rework the guide. They’ve taken a potentially dizzying amount of information and placed it in charts and graphs that should make it easy to digest. A nutrition plan never looked so beautiful.

In the 9 years since we launched P90X, we’ve watched umpteen diet fads come and go, each one claiming to be the final word in sports nutrition. It’s absurd, really, considering there’s no one single plan that works for everyone. The P90X2 Fuel Your Performance Nutrition Guide doesn’t claim to do that. Instead, it’s a wide-ranging guide intended to offer you all the tools needed to work with the only nutrition expert in the world who can truly tell you the right way to eat. That nutrition expert?
