Do not quit…starting over is hard!

Monday, August 18th, 2014

How many times have you quit something and then tried to start cover? It is hard isn’t it? It is so hard! Do not quit…starting over is hard! I can’t tell you how many times in my life I have quit something and then wanted to start over and had the worst time doing it. Why is that?  Why is starting the hardest part? Once in motion we are fine but boy, getting in motion is tough cookies isn’t it?  donotquit

This brings me to my current dilemma.  I quit.  Yup.  Life happened and I stopped working out.  I also stopped eating as well as I usually do.  Not good.  I would try start so many times but could never stick to it.  I have had so much success with Beachbody workouts so I know they work and I know I will have success but I just can’t get myself to start and stick with it.  Why is that so hard?  It is something that happens with so many people and I wish I knew why.  I suppose if I knew than I would not be going through what so many others go through also.

Do you have the same issue I am having now?  Do you want to join me and conquer this with me? Gosh knows I need the motivation.  I’d love to start and most of all, continue, with some other people.  I have gained weight, I don’t feel as good as I used to and I’m ready to get back in shape and fit into those clothes I used to.

If you want to help motivate me send me an email to jobrandes@overactivelife.com and we will do this together.  I am ready but I need your help.

Strength Training….Does it REALLY matter?

Monday, October 21st, 2013

If you’re like me you LOVE CARDIO. Your heart pounding, sweat dripping and all of your body parts moving. Listening to your favorite beats will your cycling at your fastest RPM’s or training for your first 5k. Is all of this cardio really that good for you? I mean without any sort of resistance training, all your doing is pumping, pumping your heart muscles without working on stabilizing or strengthening some of your other major muscles groups like, quads, calves, hamstrings, glutes, lats, biceps, triceps, traps, chest and core.

So, why do strength training AND cardio. The combination of both wiIMG_20120627_193802ll burn more calories between the repetitive motion of cardio, where you to take minimal to no breaks in a fairly long distance of time, and the heavy lifting, where you to take many mini breaks to either change out weights, move to another routine or just let your muscles “breath” for a minute. For one thing, strength training is needed to sustain muscle mass and increases your bones density, which is extremely beneficial when it comes to all of the stress you can put on your joints and bones from running, cycling, jumping, etc… Whenever you take on muscle, your body becomes this amazing furnace for calories and begins to slowly burn them away, so the right combination cardio and strength training will have you burning fuel and slimming down, but with the right intake of proper food you can always keep the furnace lit=energy sustained.  Energy sustained is more motivation, more focus and feeling young and spry again, like a teenager.

Because strength training strengthens muscles and increases bone density, as you age, you minimize the likelihood of encountering osteoporosis,  brittle bones, arthritis or encountering back issues. The proper nutrition, cardio and strength training will aide in the prevention of diabetes, heart disease, obesity.

So do your weight training.  We love Body Beast, P90X, P90X2 and P90X3 which is coming soon for the best weight training around!

Got questions?  Feel free to contact us here and remember we offer FREE fitness coaching, have groups on Facebook we’d love you to join for support and motivation and are always available for help anytime.  We LOVE to help!

Does exercising make you think too much?

Tuesday, September 10th, 2013

So before I venture out to start my work day on a bicycle, I wanted to reflect with you about my day yesterday while riding around. My job entails responding to helping people, approaching suspicious people, being a visible presence, etc…. So in between most of these duties, I have a lot of time to just think. I believe moving around, taking in what’s around you in silence and just being alone gives people a lot of time to think. Yesterday I thought a lot about my future. How I need to make a major decision in my life for the best, but that by making the decision, I am venturing into the unknown. Would you leave a job that you have had for the past 15 years that you were once very passionate about, but now you just go through the motions?  Do you continue to “just be” once the passion is almost gone or has completely dissipated? Do you keep going through the motions hoping that one day the passion will return?brain-thinking

It is good to know, day to day, what to expect when you have already “settled” into the life you have now, but is your health and happiness at stake by “settling”?  Are you putting the well-being of your family at risk too because you might fear change.  “I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear”- Rosa Parks

The previous quote answers the question for me of what I must do. My mind is made up so what do I have to be afraid of? Failing in whatever venture I take on? Well yes, to some, failing is a part of life and that is how we learn, but I think to succeed you must fail in some things, but not in all. It is that one small piece to where you don’t fail that the little light of hope comes through and with that little light, I will use it to make my passion for fitness and helping other make me successful. For me, success will amount to greater health and happiness.

So YES, exercising does make me think too much.

Motivation…what is and where can I find it???

Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

Ugh, ever have one of those days, weeks, months where you just feel like you never want to see those running shoes again, or lift another weight, or do another squat, crunch or lunge?? What you’re lacking is MOTIVATION. Now how do you get it and what the heck is it? Motivation can come from ideas, events, things, other people’s guidance and support or it can come from within-like a personality trait. No matter where your MOTIVATION comes from, YOU are always the important role in the play.positive[5]

MOTIVATION is a drive that gives purpose and direction to what YOU do. Internal motivation when it comes to exercise is a persons pleasure and experience with exercise.  If you are a person who internally pushes yourself away from exercising by making excuses, complaining about exercising or are inconsistent with your exercise program then I have a few questions for you. WHO ARE YOU SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH? Positive, motivated, energetic people. Or negative, lackluster, slumdog “ain’t no millionare here” people. I think that “you become the company you keep” and “The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree”. If you are constantly around poisonous people then you will become infected.

WHAT ARE YOU PUTTING IN YOUR MOUTH? Fruits, vegetables, whole wheat grains, water. Or french fries, pizza, hamburgers, soda, candy bars. I think it is hard to motivate yourself when you feel weighed down from your daily intake of crap. Your metabolism hits rock bottom and you’re dragging. It’s hard to motivate yourself when you have just downed a hamburger and fries for lunch or deep fried chicken and mashed potatoes for dinner. “You are what you eat”, that saying is true. I am waiting to turn into a skinless chicken one day. To me, what I put into my mouth in the morning will basically project how my day will go. If I were to have an empty calorie doughnut, then I would be on a sugar high then crash…looking for more sugar to get me back to that high. Oh and let’s not forget that I might as well strap that one to my thigh or stomach because that’s where it is going. If I were to have oatmeal with a wee bit of honey, then I know it is healthy and it has filled me up and given me healthy, MOTIVATING, sustainable energy without the guilt.969570_571342776256548_1000400611_n

In short, look for healthy, positive people who have the  same or similar goals that you have regarding food and fitness. Become a part of a group who workout together, make each other accountable, share tips and ideas for workout plans and nutritional plans. When you MOTIVATE yourself to become better, others will see it and become MOTIVATED to become better as well.

Should You Be Working Out with Others?

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Whether you’re one part of an overweight or even fit couple, or single and looking to get in the best shape of your life, you might find it tough to stay motivated. Our lives are hectic and busy. It’s easy to slip into habits that keep us from getting out to the gym, and even easier to turn to those fattening foods that are so tempting.

So, what can you do to keep yourself motivated? Working out with others is one of the best ways to get started. In this post, we’ll cover:

  • Why it’s important to have an accountability partner
  • Benefits of having a motivation or accountability partner that you might not have thought about
  • How we, your Team Beachbody Coach can help you find workout partners and keep you motivated

The Importance of Having an Accountability Partner

Okay, you may have started working out with your partner but find that you’re not making the progress you had hoped for. You may be skipping workouts or eating the wrong foods. It’s easy to sit down and talk to each other about the changes you need to make in your life, but it’s difficult to actually stick with them.

While working out with your partner might seem like a great idea, it often turns out to sabotage the whole plan. You and your partner enabled each other’s bad health behaviors in the first place. It’s almost impossible to break free of these patterns, unless you look for help elsewhere.

Working out with another couple, or even another person, can help to keep you accountable. When you know that someone will be relying on you for their own motivation, you’re less likely to skip your workout. If it’s your spouse, though, you’ll probably justify skipping tonight’s workout because you have another movie from Netflix that you just have to watch.

Those sorts of behaviors just won’t cut it.

Surprise Benefits of Having an Accountability Partner

Not only will you be more likely to get to your scheduled workouts, but you’ll also be less likely to “cheat” when it comes to your nutrition. How?

Keep a nutrition journal and trade them each week with your accountability partner. It might seem like a lot of work, but it really only takes a few minutes each day. When you know that someone else is going to be looking at what you’ve been eating, you’re less likely to turn to junk food.

You’ll also be driven to try harder during your workouts when you have a motivational buddy to compete with. Seeing who can complete the most reps during an Insanity or TurboFire workout will ensure that you try your hardest during each session.

Don’t worry, though, if your accountability partner seems to be doing a lot better than you. Just keep on focusing on doing better than you did last week, and aim to beat them during the next workout session. You’ll see that you get better with each work out, even if you never actually do better than your partner.

Finally, your accountability partner will provide emotional support. It can be very challenging to make drastic changes to your lifestyle. Even if you would consider your current level of fitness acceptable, getting to that next level can be trying.

When you have a motivational partner that’s going through the same experience as yourself, you’ll find it a lot easier to stick with the plan. Hearing encouraging words from someone who’s “been there, done that,” is extremely helpful.

How Can a Beachbody Coach Help You Find an Accountability Partner?

One of the best things about signing up for a program like TurboFire, Insanity, or P90X through a Beachbody coach like us is that you’ll get to join a motivational group. We will also check in with you on a regular basis to see how you’re doing. Your success is our success!  We have an amazing group on Facebook that you can join that will be your key to success.

You’ll gain this benefit not only from signing up for workout programs, but also if you purchase the Ultimate Reset or Shakeology Home Direct. It’s absolutely free, and we have committed to helping you stay on track.

accountability_pic11Part of our role in your fitness program is setting you up with a private group of individuals also being coached, this is where our closed group on Facebook comes into play. You’ll join us for regular chats on Facebook, and everyone will be reporting their progress. When you’re a member of one of our group, you’ll find it easy to be motivated. You know you’ll have to share your progress tomorrow, and you won’t want to be the only one who watched a soap opera instead of hitting the gym!

Get in touch with us to learn more about the benefits of free coaching when you purchase a Team Beachbody product through my site. I’m more than happy to help you understand how these programs can help you out.

Share your experiences with having a motivational or accountability partner in the comments, and let everyone know how your fitness journey is progressing!

MOTIVATION….we all have it hidden somewhere

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

I woke up today and the question popped in my head, “What motivates people? What motivates me? Why I am so motivated and others aren’t? What exactly is motivation to me?”

Well, Merriam-Webster would say motivation is: The act or process of motivating. The condition of being motivated.  A motivating force, stimulus or influence: incentive, drive.

Another definition is: The reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.  The general desire or willingness of someone to do something.

We know that there are good motivators and bad motivators out there.  Food, alcohol, drugs, negative people are bad motivators.  They are a stimulus or influence and more than not, a reason one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.  A way that can harm and damage a persons self-esteem, health and overall well-being.  When we let the negative motivators take over our lives then we loose control of ourselves, which in turn affects our families, our relationships with others and can lead to unknown self destruction of ourselves internally.

Fitness, fitness, fitness, healthy eating habits and positive people are motivators that will help us live longer, happier and productive lives.  I have engulfed myself in fitness all of my life due to the unforeseen happening of “life’s occurrences”, but I also caused damage to myself by having food (negative motivator) take place in my life during my late teens and early twenties.  It takes time for some, myself included, to find those positive motivators and make them a permanent part in our lives.

Mine not only is fitness, but is being in a healthy relationship, being around friends that are positive and learning to eat to live NOT living to eat.  As one of my favorite workout programs (P90X2) says, it takes TIME, PATIENCE and PRACTICE to get to where we want to be in our lives.

Never giving up and finding what your POSITIVE MOTIVATION IS and who your POSITIVE MOTIVATORS are is pertinent for success, health and wellness.   For some people in our wonderful workout group it is keeping the momentum of feeling strong and getting stronger.  A couple of team members stated that their kids were their motivation and having their kids see that working out is enjoyable, then the positive impact of working out will motivate the kids to be active and not become overweight or have a weight problem at all.  Wanting to be around to watch not only their children grow up, but their grand kids as well.  Anger motivates some people to get things done and for others it is accomplishment.  Seeing how far they have come in their health and fitness goals and wanting to maintain that “high”, so to speak, of doing something good for yourself and seeing/feeling positive results.  One of our team members is motivated to workout so she can “rock a belly button ring”-awesome.  This last one made me smile and I have to agree that we all have MOTIVATION hidden somewhere.

Whatever your positive motivation is, make sure to spread it around like wildfire because there is someone you know who needs that kind of motivation in their life.  If it is not your motivator that gets them going, then help them find theirs because we know that we all have it hidden somewhere.

Becoming the Real You…a Lifestyle Change

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

I have had a lot of people come to me wanting to change the way they eat, workout, and go about their daily life.  They want to make a complete lifestyle change.  These people used to be like me.  The Jo-Anne Brandes I used to know was overweight by about 100 pounds, was lazy, didn’t workout, ate a lot of fast food and loved drinking soda.  The Jo-Anne Brandes I know now is the true me.  I do not eat fast food anymore, I cut out red meat completely, I do not drink soda, I lost over 100 pounds, and I enjoy exercise in all forms.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I will still have a dessert once in a while because I sure do love chocolate and there are days that I just don’t feel like exercising but I make up for it because I have made a lifestyle change.

I have talked to many people who log everything they eat on myfitnesspal.com or livestrong.com and that is great.  I have done it, trust me!  How are you going to learn how to figure out what to eat if you do not track your calories?  The P90X and INSANITY Nutrition Guide are there to guide you for that reason.  Every workout program from Beachbody comes with a detailed plan so you can learn how to eat right.  Yes, in the beginning you will be weighing your portions, tracking your calories, and it will be a bear.  I understand, I have been there.  You will wonder to yourself how on earth you can do this for every meal for the rest of your life.  Relax, you won’t have to.  Just like anything new to you it takes practice.  After you do it for a while you will learn it.  Eventually you will understand what is a normal portion size and how many carbs and proteins you need in each meal and you won’t need to track it.  Remember, you learned how to eat poorly over a long period of time so learning the right way will take a bit of time.  It is ok.

The same goes with your workouts.   For example, say you are starting with TurboFire, you are going to be a bit lost watching Chalene jumping around the screen.  I was very lost, I am so uncoordinated.  After you do the workouts for a few days (or weeks in my case) then you will adjust and you will have it down pat.  You will get the hang of it and you will know exactly what you are doing.  You will probably even start inviting friends over and laugh at them being as lost as you were.  It just takes time.

The bottom line is to not be discouraged.  Do not give up so quickly.  There are a lot of folks in your position and they are all struggling.  I am available and will be happy to work with you.  All the people on my team will be happy to encourage and motivate you.  We offer free fitness coaching and have a great support group on Facebook also that we would love you to join.  Just send me an email, friend me on Facebook, or contact me here.  It is no bother at all, I would really love helping you and my teammates would to.

Are There Really Benefits To Being A Positive Person?

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Honestly, if you or someone you know has to ask this question then be afraid, be very afraid.   Absolutely there are benefits about being, thinking and acting positively and especially associating with positive people.  Don’t get me wrong, we all have things happen in our lives that are or that we consider to be devastating, life changing, abnormal or negative.  How you choose to handle these types of situations is up to you.  I know, I know,  easier said than done, but you at least have to try at becoming a better person for yourself and those who have to spend almost every waking hour around you, either  at home or at work.

Think about it.  If you believe that bad things happen to you all of the time, that the world is coming to an end, that there is absolutely no light at the end of the tunnel, then you will be destined to live a life of loneliness, depression and misery.  Think again, is that really considered living? No.  It’s called moping, vile and you just carry around a huge cloud of boo-hoo everywhere you go.  Who really wants to befriend such a negative person?

So, why is it important to LIVE a positive life?attitude is everything graphic

  • Studies have shown that people become more successful easier and faster than their negative counterparts.
  • The obvious of being a happier person.
  • More energy and inner power and strength to accomplish and achieve goals in LIFE.
  • You end up with this amazing power to inspire and motivate others.
  • With a positive mindset, any adversity you might face, will be handled with a greater logic and reasoning.
  • “Good things happen to good (positive) people”.
  • People respect and want to be around you. You end up being a positive role model for your children, for those who work with you or for you and relationships become less stressful and more enjoyable.

This is a choice and your choice should be that you want to Be Happy and “look on the bright side of life”.  In situations of stress or negativity there has to be some positive in it or you would never get out of it alive.  Things blow over with time, patience and positivity.

You eat right and work out to keep your body in shape, but do you ever think about how you can make your mind/body healthier.  Positive thinking, positive people and a positive attitude will take you farther than you know when it comes to your mental and physical health.

A baby mosquito came back after its 1st fight.
Dad asked: “How did you feel?”
Baby mosquito replied: “Dad it was wonderful. Everyone was clapping for me”

Moral: Take everything positively

Having the Workout Mindset for a Better You

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

“I can’t do it”.  “I’m too tired”. “It’s too hard”. “I’ll never be able to finish this”. “I’d rather do something else”. “It’s too hot”.  “I’ll never lose this weight”.  “I’ll never have that ‘perfect’ body”.  Do you recognize those quotes?  I’m sure you have said those any many others to yourself before, right?  I’ve done it, we’ve all done it.  It’s all about mindset and we need to have the right mindset if we want to accomplish our goals.   How are you going to be able to lose that weight or get that body you want if you don’t think you can do it?  That’s right, you won’t be able to.  It will never happen.

So, what are you going to do to get yourself in the right mindset?  We all seem to find excuses not to workout.  It’s easy isn’t it?  You get home from work late, you are tired, you have chores, the kids need help with homework or soccer practice, you have to make dinner for the family…there is always something going on and working out comes at the bottom of the list right?  It shouldn’t.  Take those excuses and throw them out the window.  You can find 30 minutes in the day for you, for your health, for your mental well-being.  I know you can.  It will not only help you but it will help your family, your friends, and those people who have to be around you all the time.  Working out will help improve your mood, your focus, increase your energy and in general will make you feel better.  The people around you will be happier just as much as you will.

You have to realize that getting and staying in the right mindset sometimes means you can’t do it alone.  You might have to have a support system or a supportive partner that is there with you along the way.  That is important to me and has helped me a lot along the way.  You may have a partner who works out with you and if so, that is great.  You may have a partner who could support you in other ways like making dinner, helping with the kids or cleaning the house so you can have some free time to workout and do what is important to you.  That is a different kind of support but important nonetheless.  Lastly, we have support systems out there from online communities like Facebook or Beachbody, people doing the same thing you are.  Reach out to those like minded individuals who are enjoying the same thing you are.

What motivates you to workout?  Do you have a particular goal you want to reach?  Do you want to lose that last 10lbs?  Do you want to fit into that pair of size 6 jeans that you haven’t worn since high school?  Do you want to get that six pack or just get big and buff?  What about marathon, are you training for that?  There are so many reasons people start and continue working out, what motivates you?  Once you figure that out maybe you need to write it down, register for that marathon, look at those jeans daily, or grab an old photo of yourself and put it on the fridge.  You need to look at your goals regularly and you’ll want to reach them.

One thing that I believe is important is that you like the workout that you are doing.  If you don’t enjoy your workouts you are not going to stick with them.  When I first started on my mission to lose weight back when I was 220lbs I really like cycling so I started riding my bike.  It was fun for me so I did it everyday.  Not only did I enjoy it but it was a great workout for someone who was in not so great shape.  Some of you may love lifting weights so P90X is a great workout and others may love intense cardio  and sweating so INSANITY is a great workout.  Then there are others that like dance workouts so TurboFire or TurboJam is a great workout.  There is something for everyone but you must enjoy it.

Think about what you are fueling your body with.  If you are eating fast food all day and things that weigh you down you are going to feel sluggish, have no energy and will not be in the mood to workout or do anything productive all day.  You need to make sure you eat foods that give you energy and fuel you properly.  Do not skip breakfast, do not eat a couple large meals a day but instead make sure to eat healthy small meals every three hours that provide all the nutrients you need to get through the day feeling great!  Your body will thank you and you will thank your body.  It is amazing how different you will feel when you eat well and fuel your body properly.

So are you ready?  Are you motivated?  Are you ready to reach your goals?  It’s time for no excuses anymore, get in that right  mindset and create a better you.
