Do not quit…starting over is hard!

How many times have you quit something and then tried to start cover? It is hard isn’t it? It is so hard! Do not quit…starting over is hard! I can’t tell you how many times in my life I have quit something and then wanted to start over and had the worst time doing it. Why is that?  Why is starting the hardest part? Once in motion we are fine but boy, getting in motion is tough cookies isn’t it?  donotquit

This brings me to my current dilemma.  I quit.  Yup.  Life happened and I stopped working out.  I also stopped eating as well as I usually do.  Not good.  I would try start so many times but could never stick to it.  I have had so much success with Beachbody workouts so I know they work and I know I will have success but I just can’t get myself to start and stick with it.  Why is that so hard?  It is something that happens with so many people and I wish I knew why.  I suppose if I knew than I would not be going through what so many others go through also.

Gosh knows I need the motivation.  I’d love to start and most of all, continue, with some other people.  I have gained weight, I don’t feel as good as I used to and I’m ready to get back in shape and fit into those clothes I used to.

Myth Buster: Children are too young to lift weights

So if you’re one of the many, possibly millions of people who think that young children should not be subjected to lifting weights or any form of resistance training, then have I got news for you. When I say “young children”, I mean those of preadolescence (starting at the age of 10 for girls and 11 for boys).IMG_0313

Here I believe is one of the primary MYTHS and that is children are too young to do resistance training because it will damage their bones. As I have read, there are numerous studies showing that just the opposite it true. Resistance training increases their muscular strength, improves the cardiovascular system, gives them better body composition and weight control, produces competency regarding motor-skill ability, reduces risk for injuries, creates a positive self-worth, a higher self-level of esteem and creates stronger bones by building bones density 4 times as much as a child who did not do resistance training.

Within my readings there have been no reports of bone/skeletal damage, growth deceleration or substantial injury taking place, which is in part to having the proper guidance and assistance when doing resistance training.

Is now the time to considering making yourself your childs’ training partner?

How Important Is Water When Exercising?

So NOW it’s time to get serious about H2O. Does is really matter how much you drink after a workout?

So you should be hydrated BEFORE your workout and stay hydrated DURING your workout, but did you know it’s also important to maintain hydration AFTER you’ve given your heart and soul into your workout?

Being hydrated before your workout will keep you from getting lethargic, dizzy, experiencing muscle cramps during the workout, regulate your bodies temperature and it will keep your body running like a well-oiled machine because that water will act as a lubricant for your muscles. Weigh yourself BEFORE and AFTER you are done kicking your own butt into shape. For each pound lost during your exercise, drink appropriately  2 -3 cups of water.

You just might alleviate muscle soreness, those body aches and pains and give those vital organs that pumped so hard to help get you through that exercise some good ol’ T.L.C.

Pregnancy and Exercise

#1 – and if I could put this in bold, I would…CHECK WITH YOUR OB FIRST AND FOREMOST! You will always want to get cleared by your doctor to work out. If you have underlying medical issues, ie hypertension, diabetes, etc…you will have to take it easier than someone who doesn’t have those issues.
#2 – if you were working out before, then you should be ok to work out now. If you were doing something like Insanity, Turbo Fire, P90X, running marathons, CrossFit…you should be able to continue until your body tells you to stop. If you were not working out before you got pregnant, you SHOULD NOT start working out with a

strenuous program after you become pregnant. If you want a good program to do, Yoga Booty Ballet is a good choice. Before I got pregnant I was doing Insanity. Once I found out I was expecting, I slowed down a little until I ordered Les Mills Combat. I did that a few times a week until I started having abdominal cramping. I listened to my body and stopped the intense workout. Everyone is different… but one thing is the same. The more active you stay while pregnant, the easier your recovery after you have the baby will be.

#3 – Shakeology is amazing. We all know that. But is it for everyone during pregnancy??…ASK YOUR DOCTOR! I will NOT (and none of our other medical professionals on this site will either) tell you that it is ok to drink it while pregnant because I am not your doctor/PA. My OB said it was great….so I used it as my prenatal vitamin. I will highly recommend not consuming it daily during the first trimester because of the high Vitamin K level. So as for me…I drank it while pregnant and I drink it now while nursing. My 5 month old is healthy and happy…and a chunk. I blame that on the amazing nutrition he is getting through me. (I also eat Paleo, so he doesn’t get a lot of crap through my diet).

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask away. I am not an expert by any means. I am a Physician Assistant and I have two healthy boys at home…so I can give you advice. But it should always be taken to your doctor before you decide on anything. Do not put you or your precious bundle of joy at risk!!!

P90X2…is it worth it?

So the question is, Is P90X2 worth it? Worth your time? Worth your money? My answer to these questions is YES!!! YES!!! and YES!!!  P90X2 takes it to the next level by use of stability balls, medicine balls and for those who are not proficient at doing pull-ups on your own, they have created a wonderful device called the pull-up assist. A lot more sturdier that using a chair and the better you get at doing pull-ups, the lower you make the pull-up assist so it is more YOU doing the exercises that the assist.

This program starts at focusing on your core. Which is the most important part of development with this program because as the program progresses into stability, mobility, balance and strength moves…the more secure, strong and stable your core is then the greater your success will be. Moves throughout this program include medicine ball burpees, stability ball push-ups, 4 position pull-ups, Drea (Webber) rolls, 4 ball push ups, yoga, Recovery and Mobility with a foam roller, and many more moves that are much more fun to experience for yourself than to read about.

One of the great things about all of these videos are the warm-ups. They are not your everyday, run of the mill warm-ups. Tony integrates the use of the stability ball (or a towel) to warm up with while doing squats, lunges and other moves to elongate and warm-up the body. Also the use of the foam roller really gets into parts of the body to help  loosen lactic acid or muscle tightness, prepping your tendons for a glorious workout. Sometimes just warming up in and of itself gets the sweat going and the heart pumping (wonderful, awesome goodness).

This program is challenging because some of the moves take TIME, PATIENCE and PRACTICE to master, but as the motto goes in any of the P90X programs “The More You Do, The Better You Get!”  There is always somebody modifying in whatever program you are doing and there is an option to just listen to the “Cues and Music” without having to listen to any of the participants in the programs.

Body Beast is on sale now in August and it is hot, hot hot.  I got amazing results with this workout program and I’m in love.  Body Beast is just amazing, fun, works and a program I am going to stick with for a long time to come. I decided after my Beachbody Success Club trip to DisneyWorld that it was time for a brand new workout program and though this new program Body Beast was the one for me.  I used to go the gym and lift weights and I heard it was like your traditional gym workouts.  Back and Bi, Chest and Tri, Shoulders, Legs, etc.  I thought how great is this, I can do my normal gym workout in my house and gain some serious muscle if I want.  As a female I was not interested in getting huge but I know from my past gym experience that I could lean out and gain muscle so I knew that Body Beast would work for me.

 

The Program

The program itself is 90 days long and has three different phases.  The phases are Build, Bulk and Beast.

Build Phase – 3 weeks – 6 on, 1 off

Bulk Phase – 6 weeks – 6 on, 1 off

Beast Phase – 3 weeks – 6 on, 1 off

 

 

 

I loved every bit of Body Beast and got the most amazing results from it.  All of the workouts are less than 50 minutes and some of them closer to 30 minutes.

A Glimpse

Build Phase

The workouts in this phase are longer, close to 50 minutes and you will mix up body parts as you can see below.  You will start getting used to doing drop sets and single sets and learning the foundations about how this program is going to work for you.  You will learn that leg day is a killer and that you will be walking funny for a couple days afterwards.  Ouch!  This is the round where you will eat big, gain weight and learn to love lifting.

  • Chest/Tri
  • Back/Bi
  • Legs
  • Shoulders
  • Cardio/Abs

They are all really great workouts with a fast face that go by really quickly.  The guys in the video are all really cute too so that makes it all better.  This is a great video for men as well as women so ladies, don’t be intimidated by the HUGE men working out.  This is for you too.  IMG_20130315_201447

The way Sagi, the trainer in this video, does these workouts is he has you do Super Sets, Giant Sets, Single Sets, Progressive Sets, Drop Sets, Tempo Sets…all this stuff that I hadn’t even heard of before but I’m getting it now.  It is pretty cool.  He will start you out with a lighter weight doing 15 reps, then have you increase your weight for 12 reps, then increase again for 8 reps and then drop your weight for another 8 reps.  This is not for all the sets but happens very frequently.  It is a great way to build muscle  It makes you feel great!  Again, this isn’t for everything but quite common throughout the workouts.

Bulk Phase

In the Bulk Phase the workout are all really short, close to 30 minutes but they are harder and faster.   The workouts in this phase consist of Chest, Legs, Arms, Back, Shoulders and then you still get in Cardio/Abs.  You will then get to do some new stuff like progressive sets and drop sets which may be new to you but they are really fun and a nice change of pace.

The one thing that is interesting about this round is that it moves very fast, remember how I said most workouts are about 30 minutes?  What this means is that you have to be able to change your weights FAST!  If you have adjustable weights like I do, I have the Bowflex SelecTechs then you will just have to get used to changing them super quick.   If you have seperate dumbbells it may be easier for you to just grab the next dumbbell but I know for me it is easier to just have the adjustable ones vs a weight set.

Beast Phase

This last phase is where you will start to cut your calories so you can “cut”.  You will incorporate the Bulk and Build workouts together in this phase.  This is really when you start to see things happening.  This is your cutting phase so those of you worried about some of that weight gain need not worry because it gets cut here.  The calories you added in the first phases are cut a lot in this phase so your muscles really start showing in this last round.

The Nutrition

IMG_20130324_170306Nutrition is a HUGE part of this program which is great.  You all know you have to eat in order to progress in your fitness goals and this program is no different.  In order to gain muscle you have to eat and it is not a bad thing. The nutrition plan is very simple to follow and it is laid out quite easily.  The guide wants me to take in approximately 2000 calories a day which is very difficult for me, I am actually still trying to work up to it.  I am not used to that much.  Everything I eat is completely natural and clean, absolutely nothing processed at all!  I am not afraid of gaining a bit of weight in this phase of the program because I know I will lose it in the next phases.  That is the point.  You gain so you can cut and lean out.  Some people are concerned with this but I have seen such amazing results with Body Beast that I am not worried at all.  You have to give this 100% pure commitment if you want the results and I do.

 

The Supplements

Speaking of pure commitment to this program, the other thing I am not skimping on are the supplements.  The Body Beast program and Sagi recommend four supplements for this program, all which can safely be used by women, I know some women are concerned about them.  There is no issue whatsoever.  I did my research because I was worried too.  The supplements are wonderful and work great.  They are as follows:

  • Beachbody Hardcore Base Shake is formulated to help maximize new muscle growth and reduce muscle breakdown—at the same time.
  • Beachbody Fuel Shot kick-starts your recovery and accelerates muscle endurance, size, and strength.
  • Beachbody M.A.X. Creatine gives you a blast of extra strength and muscle growth plus speeds up muscle recovery.
  • Beachbody Super Suma helps amp up your body’s own hormone production (don’t worry ladies), muscle strength, size, and endurance.

Again, ladies do not worry!  These shakes that you will make with these supplements are part of the nutrition plan and are important to you getting the results you want.  I love them and highly recommend giving them a go.  Remember that Beachbody knows what they are doing and work with trainers who know the ins and outs of this stuff so if it didn’t work they wouldn’t include it as part of the program.

Focus T25 Review

My take on T25. Some of you might have heard the buzz about a new Beachbody program that just came out called Focus T25Well, if you either have or have not heard about the release of this program, I am here to give you the 411 on what Focusing for just 25 minutes a day5 days a week can do for you.1013077_10201155824074410_636945411_n

Shaun T, the creator of Insanity and Insanity: Asylum Volume I and Volume II figured out a way to give people what they were asking for. An efficient and effective workout in a little amount of time. There are three phases to this program: Alpha, Beta and Gamma. Each phase builds upon the other by starting at your base, to core, to upper body and then strength. I am on the fourth week of this program which is the Alpha phase. It consists of Cardio, Speed 1.0, Total Body and lower body workouts and abs. On the 6th day you rest and on the 7th day you stretch, before you do 5 days of hard work for 25 minutes a day, all over again.  This first phase is all about foundation work.  The second phase, Beta is about Core.  We will talk more about that when we get to that phase.

These workouts have you breathing hard, sweating and pushing yourself to do the best you can while FOCUSING for 25 minutes straight. If you need to modify to get through all 25 minutes, you modify with Tania “The Machine”, from Insanity and Hip Hop Abs, Rock’n Body, etc… The music is fun, Shaun T is motivational as always and if you “Trust and Believe” in yourself to commit to just 25 minutes, you will have an amazing transformation.

This is not like Insanity, we get that question a lot.  Insanity gives you breaks.  T25 does not.  You will go for 25 minutes straight during Focus T25.  Insanity you will go for a few minutes and then get a short rest.  Also, Insanity is longer than T25.  Month 1 of Insanity is slightly over 30 minutes and month 2 of Insanity is closer to one hour.  Focus T25 is never more than 25 minutes exactly, that is the beauty of it.  Whether you are in the Alpha, Beta or Gamma phase you will always be working out for 25 minutes.  Lastly, Focus T25 has the modifier so ANYONE, and I mean anyone can do this workout.  Insanity is not for everyone.  It is definitely an advanced program.  If you have questions about either program just contact us.

This program is great for those who are crunched for time, looking for a full body, efficient, effective, creative work out that will give amazing results not only physically but emotionally because you will not only look good, but feel better and have more time to do the things that are important to you; spend time with family!!!!   It is by far one of my favorites and a great program to use as a hybrid to mix in with something like Body Beast, P90X or another lifting program for that extra cardio.  If you want to contact us about doing a hybrid go ahead and do so as Jo-Anne is doing Body Beast and T25 for a great mix up program.

Should You Be Working Out with Others?

Whether you’re one part of an overweight or even fit couple, or single and looking to get in the best shape of your life, you might find it tough to stay motivated. Our lives are hectic and busy. It’s easy to slip into habits that keep us from getting out to the gym, and even easier to turn to those fattening foods that are so tempting.

So, what can you do to keep yourself motivated? Working out with others is one of the best ways to get started. In this post, we’ll cover:

  • Why it’s important to have an accountability partner
  • Benefits of having a motivation or accountability partner that you might not have thought about
  • How we, your Team Beachbody Coach can help you find workout partners and keep you motivated

The Importance of Having an Accountability Partner

Okay, you may have started working out with your partner but find that you’re not making the progress you had hoped for. You may be skipping workouts or eating the wrong foods. It’s easy to sit down and talk to each other about the changes you need to make in your life, but it’s difficult to actually stick with them.

While working out with your partner might seem like a great idea, it often turns out to sabotage the whole plan. You and your partner enabled each other’s bad health behaviors in the first place. It’s almost impossible to break free of these patterns, unless you look for help elsewhere.

Working out with another couple, or even another person, can help to keep you accountable. When you know that someone will be relying on you for their own motivation, you’re less likely to skip your workout. If it’s your spouse, though, you’ll probably justify skipping tonight’s workout because you have another movie from Netflix that you just have to watch.

Those sorts of behaviors just won’t cut it.

Surprise Benefits of Having an Accountability Partner

Not only will you be more likely to get to your scheduled workouts, but you’ll also be less likely to “cheat” when it comes to your nutrition. How?

Keep a nutrition journal and trade them each week with your accountability partner. It might seem like a lot of work, but it really only takes a few minutes each day. When you know that someone else is going to be looking at what you’ve been eating, you’re less likely to turn to junk food.

You’ll also be driven to try harder during your workouts when you have a motivational buddy to compete with. Seeing who can complete the most reps during an Insanity or TurboFire workout will ensure that you try your hardest during each session.

Don’t worry, though, if your accountability partner seems to be doing a lot better than you. Just keep on focusing on doing better than you did last week, and aim to beat them during the next workout session. You’ll see that you get better with each work out, even if you never actually do better than your partner.

Finally, your accountability partner will provide emotional support. It can be very challenging to make drastic changes to your lifestyle. Even if you would consider your current level of fitness acceptable, getting to that next level can be trying.

When you have a motivational partner that’s going through the same experience as yourself, you’ll find it a lot easier to stick with the plan. Hearing encouraging words from someone who’s “been there, done that,” is extremely helpful.

Abs Are Made in the Kitchen – You Earn a Six Pack from Eating Well

One of the benefits of getting into great shape is having a body that looks great. Most people consider a six pack to be the most important part of a sexy physique. But, if you’re working out and not experiencing results, it may be that you’re just not eating properly.mens six pack abs

Working out can help to keep us looking great. It’s an essential component for anyone looking to sculpt their body. But all by itself, working out won’t do more than improve your health. While we all want to feel our best, spending hours in the gym working out or doing our wonderful Beachbody workouts without visible results can really eliminate your motivation.

Learning how to eat to increase your chances of showing your abs is essential. In this post, I’m going to cover:

  1. Three eating habits that are keeping your abs from showing through
  2. What you should eat instead, so that your melt that belly fat
  3. A great program that can help jump start your journey towards having killer abs

Three Eating Habits that Hide Your Abs

It’s simple to understand how you develop abs. You lose fat and gain muscle. But if you’re working out on a regular basis, you might wonder why your abs aren’t haven’t shown up yet. It probably has to do with the eating habits that are left over from before you changed your lifestyle to focus on fitness.

The first is eating late-night snacks. There are a number of reasons why you shouldn’t eat before you going to bed – you’ll get better rest, wake up earlier, and have more energy. The biggest challenge with eating before bed, though, is that you’re filling your body with calories just before it goes into a low-metabolic state.

This means everything that you eat before you go to bed is more likely to end up stored as fat. Don’t eat anything three hours before you go to bed. It’s as simple as that.

The second bad habit you probably have is eating “three square meals” a day. You need to divide your caloric intake between six meals. Ideally, each meal should be two hours apart. It can be tough to eat like this, but it has great benefits when it comes to boosting your metabolism.  Check that P90X Nutrition Plan or your Insanity Nutrition and you will notice that you won’t be eating “three squares” a day.

The third bad eating habit that most people have is simply eating the wrong things. I’m not going to tell you to cut out carbohydrates or deserts. That would be totally insane! But, you do need to focus on making each meal well balanced.

There are plenty of great resources that can help you do this. Myplate.gov is one of the most popular. Bonus Tip – avoid red meat! It’s best that you find your protein through sources like chicken and fish. They’re lean proteins, and they’re less likely to collect in your digestive tract. One of the reasons so many people seem to have large bellies is because of the red meat that’s collected in their gut. Limit your consumption of red meat to no more than once every ten days to see amazing results.

What You Should Eat to Melt the Belly Fat

There’s no miracle food that burns more calories than it puts in your body. Sure, broccoli, brussel sprouts and other forms of roughage (like lettuces and cabbage) can help to jump start your metabolism and digestive process, but they’re just not going to help you burn calories.female six pack

Instead, you should focus on eliminating the processed foods that probably make up the majority of your diet. Build your entire diet around organic alternatives to the foods you’re used to eating, and you’ll see that you experience results in no time at all.
